Full Event Description
This webinar is intended for library, archives, and museum professionals interested in learning about critical and radical cataloging; understanding the traditions of information organization in libraries; recognizing bias in cataloging standards and procedures; improving access and discovery of resources describing historically-marginalized groups and identities; and advocacy for prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in cataloging and metadata work.
At the end of this webinar, attendees will have an understanding of:
Best practices for critical cataloging related to the heading creation process and description work
How to prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice principles as part of cataloging and metadata work
Advocacy for labor and institutional resources required to engage in critical and radical cataloging work
This webinar is open to all who work in an archive, library, or museum. Non-catalogers or metadata workers are very welcome.
Those who participate in public services, library instruction, reference work, outreach, and more will hear about how the work of catalogers and metadata professionals relates to your work.

Meet the Presenters
Treshani Perera
Treshani Perera is the Music and Fine Arts Cataloging Librarian at the University of Kentucky, and also serves as the Unit Head for the Fine Arts Cataloging Unit. Treshani provides cataloging for all formats in the Fine Arts Library, and oversees operations related to preservation, cataloging, and special projects in the Fine Arts Library. Prior to joining the University of Kentucky in 2018, Treshani worked as a Technical Services Assistant, providing cataloging and catalog maintenance support for a consortium of small colleges in SE Wisconsin, and as an Audio-Visual Archives Assistant for a cultural heritage archive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Treshani received her MLIS and Master of Music in Music History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Deidre Thompson
Deidre Thompson is currently the Collection Services Librarian at the Maryland Institute of Art after having held positions at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, the Frick Art Reference Library and the MoMA Library in New York. She received her B.A. in Art History from Bard College and an M.L.I.S. in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute. As Collection Services Librarian, she supports the acquisitions, description and access to print and electronic resources for the MICA community and serves as Decker’s liaison to Animation, Illustration, Illustration Practice and Art Education among other duties. Deidre was born in Belize City, Belize and raised in the Bronx.
